Portsmouth Abbey Art teacher Kevin Calisto was recognized last evening at the Fourth National Monotype/Monoprint Juried Exhibition, held at the Attleboro Arts Museum, in Attleboro, Mass. Kevin received an Honorable Mention for his monotype, titled, "Midnight by the Boathouse," a landscape work he produced during the 2013-14 school year.
Kevin's work was among a collection of more than 100 entries submitted by artists from around the country. The national competition is sponsored by the Monotype Guild of New England.
According to the Monotype Guild, a monoprint is "a one-of-a-kind transfer of an inked or painted image from a metal or plastic plate to paper or another receiving surface. The ink or paint may be transferred from plate to paper with hand pressure or by means of an etching press."
"Midnight by the Boathouse" is the combination of wet and dry media on the surface of a plexiglass plate. "Much of the process happens by chance with the intention of creating a visceral response to my surroundings," explained Kevin. "Although it isn't a direct representation of what I encounter, there is a sense of space and atmosphere that occur from the layers of material. The ideas of silence, lucid thought and isolation are portrayed through the disparity of the piece's density and vastness.
"I am delighted to be honored from among a group of such talented artists," he continued. "It was great fun to be a part of it!"
The exhibition will be on display at the Attleboro Arts Museum until Saturday, May 7.
Congratulations, Kevin!
