The Spring 2015 Sports Assembly, held Wednesday, May 20, highlighted the many accomplishments of Raven teams and individuals this spring, but comments from Headmaster Dan McDonough and Athletics Director Al Brown pointed to the vital role played by team captains, and Sixth Form student-athletes, in leading and supporting their respective teams and teammates.
"Just like children are often formed by their parents, captains are often formed by their captains," offered Mr. McDonough. "The vast majority of you will have great captains following in the footsteps of their great captains. But if in the next three years you are a captain following a bad captain, resolve to be a captain that serves the rest of the team instead of looking for ways for the team to serve you. Be a captain that supports and encourages younger players, even if they are better than you and get more playing time than you.
"We have only one way at Portsmouth Abbey to treat people, and I thank all of you for helping us do that. Thanks for a great season and a great year."
Coach Brown echoed Mr. McDonough's remarks, stating that this spring had been "the best in the 15 years I have been here. The spirit, sportsmanship, being a good teammate and competitor, commitment to growing as a player, camaraderie, respecting our opponents and officials – and, yes, having a winning season for many of our teams – was all remarkable this spring. It resonated across every sport...and the Sixth Formers led the way.
"Thank you, Sixth Formers, for being such terrific role models."
Matt Peterson and Kurt Andersen, longtime equipment room managers, presented 27 Sixth Formers with their Portsmouth Abbey Varsity Blankets, signifying their participation in three seasons of varsity sports during their Sixth Form year.
