February 2: the start of Portsmouth Abbey's winter weekend - surely a reason to celebrate. But the date also marks that annual hibernal appearance of Punxsutawney Phil. To start the day on a celebratory note, St. Benet's Houseparent Megan Krakowiak put together an early-morning Groundhog Day celebration in the stately but cozy common room. The Benet's House girls gathered by the fireplace and enjoyed coffee and doughnuts while they waited to hear news of furry Phil's proclamation about winter. (For the record, he saw his shadow, indicating six more weeks of winter.) "I think it is important to find as many reasons as possible to celebrate," says Krakowiak, "especially in the winter. I've been talking with the girls about Groundhog Day for weeks now, so we were very excited to get together this morning." Miss Krakowiak also has groundhog crafts and treats on the calendar for winter weekend.
